Introduction

This five-day Process Safety Management (PSM) course delves into the essential elements and best practices for managing safety hazards associated with industrial processes. Designed for those working in chemical, petrochemical, and other high-risk industries, the course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent major process accidents and ensure a safer work environment.

Objective

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the core principles of Process Safety Management (PSM) and its role in preventing major accidents.
  • Identify and analyze potential process safety hazards associated with industrial processes.
  • Apply key PSM elements like process safety information, pre-startup safety reviews, and management of change.
  • Develop and implement effective procedures for managing process safety hazards.
  • Participate in incident investigations and corrective action processes related to process safety.
Audience
  • Process Engineers and Chemical Engineers
  • Safety Officers and Health & Safety Specialists
  • Plant Managers and Operations Supervisors
  • Maintenance Technicians working with process equipment
  • Anyone involved in the design, operation, or maintenance of industrial processes.
Content

Day 1: Introduction to Process Safety Management

  • Understanding Process Safety: Defining process safety hazards and the potential consequences of major accidents.
  • Introduction to PSM Standards and Regulations.
  • PSM Core Elements: An overview of the 14 core elements of an effective PSM program, including process safety information, management of change, and incident investigation.

Day 2: Process Safety Information and Hazard Identification

  • Building a Robust Process Safety Information (PSI) System: Understanding the importance of collecting, maintaining, and utilizing accurate process safety information.
  • Hazard Identification Techniques: Exploring methods like What-If/Checklist analysis, Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies, and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify potential hazards.
  • Risk Assessment and Risk Management: Techniques for assessing process safety risks and developing strategies to mitigate them.

Day 3: Engineering Controls and Safe Work Practices

  • Implementing Engineering Controls: Exploring various engineering controls like pressure relief systems, containment dikes, and automated safety systems to minimize risks.
  • Safe Work Practices for Process Safety: Developing and enforcing safe work procedures for operating and maintaining process equipment.
  • Pre-Startup Safety Reviews: Understanding the importance of conducting thorough safety reviews before starting up new or modified processes.

Day 4: Management of Change and Incident Management

  • Management of Change Procedures: Establishing a systematic process for managing changes to processes, equipment, and procedures to ensure safety.
  • Effective Incident Investigation for Process Safety: Learning methods for investigating process safety incidents and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response: Developing plans and procedures for responding to process safety emergencies.

Day 5: PSM Program Implementation and Maintenance

  • Building a Culture of Process Safety: Encouraging a safety-conscious workforce through training, communication, and employee involvement.
  • Auditing and Continuous Improvement: Conducting internal PSM audits and implementing a continuous improvement process to ensure the effectiveness of the PSM program.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Reporting: Understanding reporting requirements related to process safety incidents and maintaining compliance with PSM standards.
Certificate

MAESTRO CONSULTANTS Certificate of Completion for delegates who attend and complete the training course.

Methodology

Our courses are highly interactive, typically taking a case study approach that we have found to be an effective method of fostering discussions and transferring knowledge. Participants will learn by active participation during the program through the use of individual exercises, questionnaires, team exercises, training videos and discussions of “real life” issues in their organizations.
The material has been designed to enable delegates to apply all of the material with immediate effect back in the workplace.

Fees
$5,750 per attendee including training material/handouts, morning/afternoon coffee breaks, and Lunch.
